A puppy at home: what you really need

A puppy is on the way! In between counting down and puppy-proofing your home, it’s wise to have the basic kit ready in advance. Here is what you really need, without unnecessary impulse buys.
A safe sleeping spot
A crate or puppy pen with a soft crate mat gives your pup their own place to settle down. Choose a mat that is washable, because accidents are simply part of the first few weeks. Put a toy in it that smells of the litter for the first nights.
Food and water to suit
Choose stable food and water bowls that don’t slide across the kitchen. A slow-feeder bowl is no unnecessary luxury: many pups eat as if it’s a competition, and calm eating is better for digestion.
The first walking kit
A soft, adjustable puppy collar or a harness plus a light lead are enough to start with. Pups grow fast, so don’t buy too expensive: within a few months the next size will already be needed.
Toys for every moment
Provide variety: something to chew on for teething, a plush toy for the bed and a toy to play with together. Rotate the toys so everything stays interesting.
Grooming from day one
A soft brush and a nail clipper belong in the basic kit. Start right away, even if it isn’t really needed yet: a pup that is used to grooming will benefit from it for the rest of their life.
With these basics at home, the big adventure can begin. Enjoy your new housemate!
